EDINBURGH UNIVERSITY suffered heartbreak as a late Inverurie Loco Works goal sent them tumbling out of the William Hill Scottish Cup in a 2-1 defeat.

The students started strongly and Jack Guthrie and Joe Aitken both had early chances saved by Scott Mathieson. The home side responded and Jordan Leyden had a 25-yard free kick brilliantly saved by Mark Tait .

Edinburgh opened the scoring on 17 minutes hen a long diagonal ball from Duncan Black was well controlled by Ross Patterson and he scored past the goalkeeper from 20 yards.

On the stroke of half-time, the hosts equalised when a cross from the left by John Maitland found Martin Laing unmarked and he headed powerfully home from 12 yards. Guthrie had the chance to put Edinburgh back ahead on 51 minutes when, following a weaving run down the left, he was brought down as he prepared to shoot. However, his penalty kick was well-saved by Mathieson. On 61 minutes, a block tackle by Edinburgh’s Black on Mitchell in the penalty area was judged a foul. Ryan Broadhurst took the kick but his firm strike was very well saved by Tait. On 87 minutes, Paul Sutherland was booked when he misjudged a through ball and, from the resultant free-kick, Hunter found the top corner from 30 yards to send Inverurie into the third round.
