A SARAH EWENS double for Spartans gave Glasgow City a fright as the Scottish Women’s Premier League resumed following a short break.

Although City eventually ran out 4-2 winners, they were made to fight all the way by a spirited home performance that pleased manager Debbi McCulloch.

She said: “Not many teams will score twice against City and we were unlucky not to get a third, so I’m pleased with that aspect.

“I asked the girls to be positive and play without fear against a side that haven’t tasted defeat in years and I felt they did that.”

Elsewhere, Hutchison Vale began life in the bottom six by beating Buchan 2-1 thanks to goals by Laura Gavin and Jennifer Malone.

Boss Andy Enwood said: “The performance was good in patches, but it was the workrate and effort that saw us take all three points.”

Meanwhile, Lizzie Arnot scored twice as Hibs Ladies were held to a 2-2 draw by high-flying Rangers at Petershill Park.

With ten players missing, the Hibees promoted a host of youth players for the game and were unlucky not to take all three points in manager Chris Roberts’ first game in charge.

Roberts said: “I felt the girls were positive, they believed in themselves, worked hard against very difficult opponents and they’re disappointed to come away with only one point, which tells its own story.
