Arniston Rangers Under-14s put in a terrific performance to secure a 2-0 win against Lochend YFC and clinch the Pilmar Smith Cup at New Dundas Park, Bonnyrigg.

Two goals in the first 26 minutes put Arniston firmly in the driving seat and their defensive performance matched their clinical finishing.

It was Lochend who started on the front foot, applying pressure by trying to get runners in behind the Arniston defence but to no avail.

As the match quickly evened out, Arniston took the lead in the 12th minute. Euan Donaldson received the ball eight yards out with his back to goal, controlled it on his chest and swirled in one movement to slot past the helpless Sam Capes in the Lochend goal.

Following a half-chance for Lochend’s John Dickson, the game slowed down with neither side creating much.

As the game was mostly contested in midfield, it was a lack of pressure from Lochend that gave Arniston the chance for their second and they seized the opportunity.

Dylan Akkur was given too much time on the left to play a wonderful ball in behind for Cameron Catterall to latch onto and he finished first time to put his side into a comfortable lead.

The second half proved much quieter than the first due to Arniston’s solidity in defence and Lochend’s inability to create chances.

The impressive Donaldson had a couple of more shots but wasn’t able to extend the lead, while Lochend’s Scott Smith almost reduced the deficit with a fierce shot that flashed wide.

As the game drew to a close, Lochend pushed hard but a goal still evaded them as the excellent Arniston centre-half partnership of Kye Brown and Aidan Winnik proved giants at the back.
