A brave performance by the home side saw City take all three points against a disappointing University side.

The opening stages of the game were fairly even, City’s Guthrie firing just over the bar before Stirling’s Geddes went close when his header was deflected wide. City almost opened the scoring in the 17th minute as Harrison’s free kick beat the defensive wall but went just over the bar.

The home side then suffered a triple blow as goalkeeper Stobie fell awkwardly and was replaced in goal by midfielder Daryl Devlin and then Dougie Gair and Vanson had to be replaced through injury.

McConnell flashed a header wide for City just before the interval but they opened the scoring after Wilson did well to rob a defender on the goal line and he cut the ball back for McConnell to fire in. City had to effectively play the second half with ten men as, with all substitutes used, Guthrie was unable to run through injury.

The Students were starting to make chances and Geddes volleyed just past the post before Miller made a weaving run and picked out Williams-Mitchell in the box but City’s Trialist was able to deflect the ball away. Devlin then showed good awareness in his unfamiliar role as goalkeeper as he punched the ball away from Geddes and Sludden went agonisingly close when his shot dipped just over.

Good work from McConnell saw him beat three men before squaring the ball but, fortunately for the students, no City player was on hand to take advantage. In the closing stages City’s luck held as Sludden’s cross to the back post went just over the bar, a shot was deflected on to the post by Paterson before being cleared and a Geddes drive crashed off the bar.

Right on the whistle the students were given a chance to claim a point but Geddes headed wide from a corner and City held out for an unlikely win.
