SCOTLAND WOMEN stormed clear at the top of their UEFA 2017 European Championship group after thrashing Macedonia 10-0 at St Mirren Park, Paisley yesterday afternoon.
The stylish Scots swept aside their beleaguered opponents with consummate ease as Jane Ross (4), Jo Love (3), Jenny Beattie, Hayley Lauder and Lisa Evans all netted.
Anna Signeul’s side played with a high tempo throughout and made the most of Macedonia’s defensive frailties by ruthlessly exploiting the hesitation in the visitors’ rearguard.
Time and again they delivered accurate crosses into the area between the Macedonian defence and their goalkeeper and with neither taking responsibility, the home side profited with alarming regularity.
Former Spartans winger Hayley Lauder, who was a stand-out performer for Scotland, insists her side remain on course to qualify for their first major tournament.
She said: “We worthy of our ten goals. We’ve worked hard in training, Lisa and I, to get rotation into the midfield and I think we did it fantastically well.
“She’s a great player and her movement makes it very easy for me to link-up with.
“The movement from our whole midfield was excellent and that made it easy for me to get on the ball in the wide areas and I’m glad the girls were in the right places to score.
“We’ve got maximum points from our four matches so far and that is what we set out to do.
“We want to get as many points as we can before we play Iceland and then we will take it from there.”
