HUGE crowds attending Spartans crucial Scottish Cup clash has caused a 15 minute delay to kick-off.
The biggest game in Spartans’ history was due to kick off at 7.45pm but the game was postponed until 8pm due to queues at the turnstiles.
Up to 1000 fans from the Capital – many wearing T-shirts bearing Twitter hashtag #BeThe12thMan – were expected at Shielfield Park for the fifth round replay against Berwick Rangers – more than 20 times the average turnout.
The Spartans FC tweeted that kick-off was delayed until 8pm due to “crowd congestion” at Shielfield.
They added: “Robust challenges and a very vocal travelling support in the terraces. It’s a tremendous atmosphere at Berwick.”
The winning team will go on to play Hibs on Sunday, March 8, in a game to be broadcast live by Sky.
Whoever progresses stands to collect a windfall of around £100,000 from TV rights and a share of the gate money at Easter Road, giving an added incentive to prevail for both clubs.
