FORMER professional Steven Armstrong is closing in on a second title triumph in the Lothians Champion of Champions.
Representing Turnhouse club BBT, he’s through to the semi-finals, which take place along with the final at North Berwick next month.
Armstrong beat former Scottish champion Simon Mackenzie (West Linton) at the 19th in the fourth round before recording a 3&2 win over Ravelston’s Stuart McLaren in the last eight.
“It was a tight game until I won the 14th, 15th and 16th,” said Armstrong, who lifted the title in 2009. He now meets Newbattle’s Stuart Thorburn, who is enjoying his best season since hanging his his football boots. The former Meadowbank Thistle, Livingston and Whitehill Welfare player beat Anthony Blaney by one hole at Liberton to book his spot in the last four.
Thorburn claimed the scalp of Silverknowes’ Keith Reilly in the Lothians Championship at Musselburgh earlier in the year before winning his club championship.
In the other half of the draw, Stephen Simants (Dunbar Castle) is waiting to find out if he’ll meet either Baberton’s Mark Riddell or Mark Lutton of the Glen.
