Sean Marc and Jamie McIntosh were the heroes as Broomieknowe won at Silverknowes to secure a home quarter-final tie in the Edinburgh Summer League.
With Silverknowes having beaten Harburn in their penultimate game, Broomieknowe needed at least a point to top the group. They picked up two instead and will now entertain Baberton as the Pollock (Scotrans) Ltd-sponsored event enters the knock-out phase.
Kenny Smith typified Broomieknowe’s fighting spirit as he recovered from being three down after three against Tam Caldwell to win 2&1.
Kevin Hastings lost to an in-form Graham Robertson before solid wins for Scott Reid and Alan Sim were offset by defeats for Niall Webster and Colin Renton.
In a tight tussle, Marc held his nerve with a ten-foot putt for par on the last hole to win one up against Ian Doig. And, behind them, McIntosh won the last hole to earn a half against Keith Reilly.
“It was a fantastic result for the boys against an excellent Silverknowes side,” said Broomieknowe team manager Stuart Beck.
“We are happy to have a home draw in the quarter-finals and hope to keep our form going, but it will be a tough game against an excellent Baberton side. This season we were in a really difficult group and the boys have done amazingly well to secure top spot.
“We have a good mix of youth and experience this year.”
The result leaves Silverknowes facing a tough trip to West Linton as the quarter-final line-up was completed by Bruntsfield Links pipping Kingsknowe for top spot in Section A on ‘goal’ difference.
Kingsknowe drew 4-4 at Mortonhall in their final game but, despite that brave effort, they’re away to defending champions Royal Burgess in the last eight.
Instead of a short trip to take on their neighbours, Brunstfield are at home to Swanston New.
