North BERWICK’S Catriona Matthew and England’s Jodi Ewart-Shadoff were pitched together in the third foursomes as Europe set about defending the Solheim Cup and gaining a first win on US soil at Colorado Golf Club near Denver later today.
Matthew, a rock of the European line-up, and rookie Ewart-Shadoff, were drawn against two of the most dangerous Americans in Morgan Pressel and rookie Jessica Korda, daughter of former world No. 2 Czech tennis player, Petr Korda
The 20-year-old Korda was born and lives in Florida. In the top match, European captain Liselotte Neumann chose fellow Swedes Anna Nordqvist and Caroline Hedwall to set the ball rolling and they faced Stacy Lewis, recent winner of the Ricoh Women’s British Open at St Andrews, and rookie Lizette Salas.
It was Suzann Pettersen and Beatriz Recari versus Brittany Lang and Angela Stanford in match two and Azahara Munoz and Karine Icher against Cristie Kerr and Paula Creamer in the bottom match. Meg Mallon, the US captain, stated that no one in her team will play in all five sessions, and intended to give everyone an outing today.
Neumann was a little more hesitant. “We will probably give everyone a rest, but I haven’t quite decided,” the Swede said last night. “I would love to see everyone on the golf course tomorrow, but I’ll wait and see what happens in the morning.”
Mallon put out two of her four rookies in the opening session – Salas and Korda – while Recari Ewart-Shadoff are two of the six European rookies. “I wanted to go with some experienced players in the morning and I’ve also got a couple of rookies in there,” said Neumann.
Both captains agreed that the form on the greens will be the key to success. “They are so undulated and so fast,” said Neumann. In some places you can’t get even close to the hole.”
