This year’s Dispatch Trophy-winning Hailes quartet of Alan Mackay, Steve McCulloch, Marc Cairnie and Gary Malone have recorded another foursomes success.
Along with Nathan McCulloch, Steve’s son, they claimed the Edinburgh Inter Club crown for Kingsknowe with a 7&6 win over Liberton in the final at Murrayfield.
After beating Swanston New and Prestonfield in the opening two rounds, Kingsknowe then conquered the hosts in the semi-finals, with Steve McCulloch and Cairnie knocking it round in seven-under 63 to finish all square at the front in that notable triumph.
On handicaps, Liberton probably went into the final as favourites but both Kingsknowe pairings produced solid performances to wrap up the win without a dramatic last-hole chip-in, as Mackay achieved to secure that Dispatch Trophy triumph over Silverknowes.
“It was great to get the team together again after the Dispatch,” admitted Mackay, who replaced Nathan McCulloch after the first round. “The bond and friendship has been the key to these two fantastic wins. Playing each other in the Hailes and Kingsknowe championships means we know each other’s games inside out.”
