Craigielaw duo Grant Forrest and Gabrielle Macdonald jetted out to Abu Dhabi today as members of a ground-breaking mixed Scottish golf squad.
For the first time, a group picked for a three-week winter training camp consisted of the country’s leading male and female players.
It followed Scottish Golf, a new amalgamated body to run the amateur game in the sport’s cradle, being set up at the beginning of October.
“It’s the first time we have gone out as a full squad together, so it should be really good to get the opportunity to practise in warm weather in great facilities,” said Macdonald, last year’s Scottish Women’s champion.
“I’m trying to do full-time golf just now, so as the weather is getting poorer here it will be great to get away and practise.”
The squad includes Scotland’s three members from this year’s winning Walker Cup team at Royal Lytham – Forrest, Ewen Ferguson and Jack McDonald.
“I think the women will definitely be able to learn from the men, as they have been really successful this year, with three players in the Walker Cup and winning the European Amateur Team Championship,” added Macdonald.
“You can always learn from them so hopefully that will help kick-start the women’s game and improve our performances next year.”
The coaching team for the trip includes Mortonhall man David Patrick.
