WEST LINTON club professional Gareth Wright completed a fairytale season on the PGA front after winning the end-of-season Play-Offs in Turkey.
The Capital-based Welshman holed a 15-foot birdie putt at the 72nd hole at Antalya Golf Club to come out on top in the battle between the top 24 PGA pros in Great Britain & Ireland.
“To win an event like this where you’re up against some of the top players in the country is really thrilling,” said Wright after closing with a 67 for a nine-under-par 275 total and a one-shot win over Englishman Matt Cort. “There’s some guys out here that have had European Tour cards, it’s a big achievement to come out and win an event like this.”
In addition to a £2000 top prize, Wright has also earned several European and Challenge Tour events next year, including, subject to confirmation from the European Tour, the BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth.
“I’m proud to be the PGA No.1 and it’s the perfect way to end the PGA season,” he added, having already been part of the first GB&I side to win the PGA Cup on American soil at CordeValle in California in September.
“I’ve had a lot of second-place finishes this year and, of course, you always want to win, so I’m really pleased to get this on the board.
“Hopefully we’ll get those Tour spots again and that will be something we can really look forward to next year.”
Before then, Wright will be back in Portugal to defend the PGAs of European Team Championship with Graham Fox (Clydeway Golf) and David Orr (Eastwood) next week.
“A success like this wouldn’t be possible without the support of everyone that helps me and also the support from West Linton Golf Club,” he said.
One behind Cort at the start of the final day, Wright was out in three-under 32. He then dropped shots at the 12th and 13th before rising to the challenge in a “match-play” situation by covering the last five holes in three-under.
“To come out here to such a great course has been amazing, we’ve been looked after really well,” admitted the winner.
