WEST and Fife were the two winners in the opening round of matches in the revamped Lothians and Fife Golf Associations Winter League.
Introduced on a one-year trial basis, this year’s event is being played at just three venues, where two matches will be staged on the same day.
The eight-man teams must include both a youth and a boy playing together in the fourth match in the fourball betterball format.
Balbirnie Park staged the first of the double-headers and Fife, winners for the past two years, made home advantage count with a 3½-½ victory over East.
Aberdour’s Scott Crichton joined forces with former SGU Order of Merit winner James White to hand out a 3 and 2 defeat to Musselburgh duo Benn McLeod and Lewis Bain in the top match.
West won by the same margin against Mid to set the pace heading into the second round of matches at Bathgate, where West will take on East while Fife are up against Mid.
The third and final venue is Monktonhall, where East meet West and Fife play Mid on November 10.
