Rory McIlroy still has bad Muirfield memories but another East Lothian venue is ticking all his boxes.
Before missing the cut in last year’s Open, the two-times major winner enjoyed spending time at Archerfield Links and he was back there this week to open a world first – a new Nike Performance Fitting Centre.
“Archerfield is obviously a very impressive facility and the relationship between Nike and Archerfield has blossomed since we held an event here last year,” said McIlroy.
“I guess it was after that the talks started to put the new performance fitting centre in place here.
“I don’t think there is any better place, to be honest, as it’s Scotland, the home of golf and also, not far from Edinburgh.”
McIlroy described himself as “brain dead” at Muirfield 12 months ago and admitted: “It beat me up a bit so I wouldn’t mind not seeing that place for a while.”
But he added: “Every time I come here it seems like the weather is nice so it seems a good place to bring your golf clubs to.
“I’d love to go and play North Berwick and a few other courses around here.”
The new centre is the first facility of its kind for Nike Golf anywhere in the world.
It has been built to help golfers maximise their potential by giving them the ultimate custom-fitting experience along with a complete game analysis from Archerfield’s elite coaching panel that includes former Ryder Cup player Andrew Coltart and top coach Gary Nicol.
“We are ecstatic about working with Nike and it was great to have Rory here to open the new facility,” said Archerfield Links CEO Tom Younger.
“The quality of the place speaks for itself and we think it is the future of golf.”
