Stephen Gallacher has lost a “friend” following the death of Dutch football legend Johan Cruyff.

The pair became buddies through golf and shared a common goal of wanting to give something back to their respective sports.

“Johann was such a lovely man and myself and (wife) Helen enjoyed spending time with both him and his wife, who always came along to the Dunhill Links,” said Gallacher.

“We often talked about our foundations and there’s no doubt that he is the type of person who inspires you to give something back.”

The pair first met in the Fondazione Vialli e Mauro Golf Cup in Italy before continuing their friendship on Scottish soil.

“We had hoped to team up in the Dunhill Links, but being in the same group as him in one of the rounds last year with me having Andriy Shevchenko as my playing partner is something I will cherish forever,” added Gallacher.
