A new name will be inscribed on the Edinburgh Summer League trophy after Longniddry and Turnhouse set up a title showdown in the Clarity-sponsored event at Newbattle next month.

Longniddry, who only joined the League last season, secured their chance to become champions at just the second attempt after beating Royal Burgess in one of the semi-finals at
Craigielaw.

It’s something of a surprise that Turnhouse haven’t yet come out on top in a tournament that has been staged since 1974, but an opportunity now awaits for the club’s current crop of top players to become legends.

They came out on top against Bruntsfield Links in the other last-four clash at Swanston New to make it a remarkable 12 wins out of 12 in this season’s event.

Both semi-finals were decided in extra holes after 4.5-4.5 draws, with David Connolly emerging as Longniddry’s hero and Lewis Bain doing likewise for Turnhouse.

After Longniddry had won the bottom three matches to recover from finding themselves 4-1 down, Connolly then clinched victory as he beat Gordon Archibald at the 19th.

Bain, meanwhile, prevailed at the 20th against Stuart McLaren as Turnhouse joined the East Lothian club in the September 11 final.

“We are delighted to get
revenge for our loss to Burgess in the quarter-finals last year and look forward to a good game against Turnhouse,” said Longniddry team manager Alistair Robertson.

His Turnhouse counter, Moray Hanson, added: “I am sure this will be another close match and one that all the players at Turnhouse are looking forward to.”
