AN EVENT won by Nick Faldo has Tom Watson playing in it this weekend.

The one in the Craigmillar Park Open line-up, though, is not a five-times Open champion who will lead the US in this year’s Ryder Cup, but a South African amateur who is a member of Fancourt in his home country and of St Andrews.

He plays off plus four and aims to make his presence felt in the Capital tomorrow and Sunday as the event tees off the Scottish Order of Merit.

Unfortunately, it’s not being graced by Blairgowrie’s Bradley Neil, Scotland’s second highest-ranked amateur behind Craigielaw’s Grant Forrest. He has decided to head instead to Wales this weekend for the Duncan Putter at Southerndown, where more world ranking points are on offer.

But there will still be plenty of talent on display. The event precedes a “New Members’ Week” commencing on April 14 at Craigmillar Park, where interested golfers can play the course for only £10 including a bacon roll and coffee.

The special offer, until April 21, is 18 months for the price of 12 or 30% off the 2014 subscription.
