Musselburgh golfer Vikki Laing is eyeing a strong finish to the Ladies European Tour season after chalking up her first top 10 in nearly two years.

The 35-year-old followed three consecutive 69s with a closing 68 at Saadiyat Beach in Abu Dhabi to claim a share
of fifth spot in the inaugural Fatima Bint Mubarak Ladies Open.

It was her best performance since finishing ninth in the Xiamen International Ladies Open in November 2014, earning Laing a cheque for close to £14,000.

She’s jumped to 49th on the money-list with three events left on the 2016 schedule – this week’s Hero Women’s Indian Open, the new Qatar Ladies Open then the season-ending Omega Dubai Ladies Masters. “My goal last week was top get a top 10 as it had been a while since I’d managed that,” admitted Laing. “Now I’m looking forward to this week as I feel my game is just starting to get going.

“I know it’s the back end of the year, but, still, a couple more good finishes would be nice.”

Laing’s card for 2017 is now virtually secured. “Not any more,” she replied to being asked if that was still a concern. “Last week has put me in better position.

“I don’t look at numbers, though, as it doesn’t serve me well. I just try to focus on hitting fairways and greens and let other things take care of themself. I just want to keep trying to get in contention and making birdies.”
