Edinburgh Capitals, in the first of a run of three games in as many nights, grabbed what could be a crucial Challenge Cup point with a well deserved 3-3 draw in Belfast last night.

It could have been more for the Murrayfield men, Giants’ Scottish forward Colin Shields scoring a late equaliser for the home side with a cool back-hand finish seven minutes from time.

Giants took the lead in the 18th minute, GB international forward Craig Peacock with the goal, however Edinburgh levelled with just six seconds remaining in the opening period with Craig McCallum, in a man-of-the-match performance, rifling a shot on the turn high past Giants’ goalie Stephen Murphy.

Belfast were on the front foot again, taking a 2-1 lead six minutes into the second period, defenceman Mitch Ganzak on hand to score, before Caps’ responded with two power-play goals less than three minutes apart to take their first lead of the game. Ryan Hayes, with his fifth goal of the season, scoring after his shot ricocheted off the body of Giants’ captain Adam Keefe, before David Rutherford was in the right place to round off a great passing play involving Hayes and Nate Fleming in the 34th minute.
