EDINBURGH CAPITALS secured a fantastic 5-4 win after penalty shots at Sheffield Steelers last night to move sixth in ice hockey’s Elite League.
Caps had raced into a 3-0 first-period lead thanks to goals by Paul Zanette, Ryan Hayes – the Elite League’s top points scorer – and Craig McCallum. But Steelers came roaring back to level the match with efforts in each period courtesy of Levi Nelson, Colton Fretter and Chris Lawrence. Trevor Gerling’s goal six minutes into the final period put the Caps back ahead only for Lawrence’s second goal for the Steelers to take the game into overtime. After that ended goalless, the Murrayfield men clinched victory as Zanette scored the crucial effort during penalty shots.
This weekend, the Caps travel to Braehead on Saturday before hosting rivals Fife Flyers on Sunday (5.30pm).
