But a spokesperson for Burton’s Biscuit Co’s Edinburgh bakery confirmed that Covid-19 mass testing of the site’s 750-strong workforce was almost complete.

He said that approximately 10 percent of staff were absent from work due to testing positive, self-isolation or Track and Trace.

Simon Browne, managing director of Burton’s Biscuit Co’s said that the health, safety and wellbeing of staff remains the company’s number one priority.

He said: “We are continuing to work very closely with the Scottish Health Protection Service and other regulatory authorities and are ensuring that it is safe to continue production at the bakery, in line with the guidance provided, as we continue to implement very rigorous health and safety protocols.

”We wish everyone who is absent from work a full and speedy recovery and would like to thank all our colleagues for their cooperation and understanding during what is a challenging time for us all.”

They say that stockholding levels and production schedules are being managed carefully to minimise the potential for disruption to supplies and customers are being kept fully informed of the situation.

Burton’s would not confirm nor deny that a mobile testing unit had been sent to the factory to assist with the outbreak.
