Anastasia Mikheeva made a successful AEGON Summer County Cup debut to help East of Scotland women defeat Warwickshire 7-2 and retain hopes of preserving hard-earned Group One status.
Skipper Mhairi Beattie’s team now conclude their programme at Eastbourne against Kent, with whom they were promoted last year, and success would guarantee their place among the elite.
Partnering Jo Stevenson, 15-year-old Anastasia won two out of three rubbers as did Beattie and Emma Devine.
The Millie Stretton/Sarah Mcfadyen combination were unbeaten.
Beattie said: “It was really good for us to get a win and even better for it to be a convincing one too.
“Anastasia Mikheeva was a really important substitute for us today. She brings great power from the back of the court and shored up our third pairing. We’ll be looking for another win tomorrow. If we get that, we’ll be safe.
“That was our main aim this year, just to stay up and if we can do that tomorrow we can look to build on that next year.”
By contrast, a winless East men will drop down from Group Two and in an 8-1 defeat by Norfolk at Cromer they were only able to field two couples. Alan Macdonald and Sam Macneill had the sole win.
