Edinburgh double-act Lynne Beattie and Mel Coutts hope to take a giant step towards Gold Coast 2018 when they compete in the Commonwealth Games Beach Volleyball Qualifying tournament in Larnaca, Cyprus this weekend.

The pair, below, who train at Portobello beach, open against Wales tonight but also face the host nation and England over the weekend as they seek to enhance their prospects.

If they can come through the competition unbeaten, then it will set them on the road to reach the Gold Coast, where beach volleyball will make its debut.

Beattie, Great Britain indoor captain at London 2012, and Coutts have this year lost two close matches with England’s top pairing Jess Grimson and Vicky Palmer, unbeaten on home sand for three years, but believe they can turn the tables.

In the men’s competition, Edinburgh’s Robin Miedzybrodzki and Seain Cook, from Perth, face Wales and Cyprus knowing that winning both matches would open the door to the Gold Coast.
