Edinburgh curlers Bruce Mouat and Gina Aitken were unable to upgrade their Junior titles to senior gold at the Scottish Championships in Perth over the weekend.

Mouat was particularly unlucky, qualifying in second place from the round-robin section before losing a thrilling 1v2 play-off at the first extra end to double world champion David Murdoch. The Murrayfield skip counted a two at the final end to make it 6-6, but Olympic silver medallist Murdoch stayed calm to win 7-6.

Mouat had one last chance to reach the final but again went down 7-6 to defending champion Ewan MacDonald after trailing 7-3.

Aitken won her first four round-robin fixtures, including a 10-5 victory over ex-world champion Eve Muirhead, but she then lost four of her next six games, and although she still made the play-offs, she could not recapture her lost momentum and was eliminated 8-3 by Lockerbie’s Hannah Fleming. Muirhead pipped Fleming 6-5 in yesterday’s final.

Mouat and Aitken are back on the ice this Saturday when the World Junior Championships start in Tallinn, Estonia.
