Canoeist David Florence is determined to end his medal drought at this week’s European Slalom Championships in Markkleeberg, near Leipzig.
Despite claiming double gold at the 2013 Worlds in Prague, two Olympic silvers in Beijing and London plus a host of World Cup victories, Edinburgh-based Florence has found European medals far more elusive.
“I’ve won one individual medal, but I’ve come very close,” he said. “Those small margins make all the difference in this sport. I’ve had a few fourths and fifths, but on another day I could easily have been on the podium. If I put in a great run and go clean, then I know I have a great chance, so I’ll be focusing on my own run and my own performance.”
Florence arrived in Germany last Sunday and is targeting double gold in the C1 singles and C2 doubles with Rich Hounslow when the competition gets under way on the River Pleisse tomorrow.
