City of Edinburgh were last night celebrating a double as they snapped up the first volleyball silverware of the season.
But whereas the men had a reasonably straightforward 25-22, 25-20, 25-2 win over Glasgow Mets in the final of the John Syer Trophy in Linlithgow, the women’s team had to show character to come through five sets against Troon Team Ayrshire before winning 3-2 in their competition.
City trailed by 2-1 on sets but refused to give up their unbeaten record and came through a tense final set. It capped a decent weekend’s work as City outclassed Aberdonia in the Schelde Sports Scottish League on Saturday 25-14, 25-10, 25-6. Naomi Symmonds impressed with her blocking throughout and captain Jen Thom noted: “For us, it was about being disciplined and focused throughout the match.”
Edinburgh Jets kept their women’s title hopes alive with a 25-23, 21-25, 26-24, 25-16 win over Troon Team Ayrshire which leaves Troon with little margin for error in the title race.
In the men’s first division, City of Edinburgh kept up their unbeaten league record by winning 25-18, 25-21, 21-25, 25-20 win at Bon Accord, gaining revenge for a defeat in their John Syer Trophy group. City lead the table on sets difference from Edinburgh Jets ahead of their clash this coming weekend.
Jets came close to losing their unbeaten record but fought for their lives to squeeze past Glasgow Mets 25-23, 21-25, 26-24, 19-25, 17-15.
