Murrayfield curler Kerry Barr was a whisker away from reaching the quarter-finals of the Glynhill International at Braehead Arena yesterday.

Barr scored two wins and a draw in her first three Group A matches, but heavy back-to-back defeats to Russia’s European gold medallist Anna Sidorova (8-2) and Swiss world champion Mirjam Ott (9-1)
denied her a last-eight spot.

Three players finished equal on seven points, but, while German Daniela Driendl progressed and Ott moved into the consolation tournament, Barr went home empty-handed.

Edinburgh’s Annie Laird, playing in Jackie Lockhart’s Aberdeen team, finished
bottom of Section B following four straight losses.

Meanwhile, Capital curlers Colin Campbell and Ross Hepburn have qualified for next month’s Scottish Men’s Championship Finals in Perth.

Campbell was part of David Edwards’ Aberdeen rink which won five games out of six in weekend qualifying, while Hepburn compiled a 5-2 winning record with Warwick Smith’s Perth team. Murrayfield’s John Hamilton and Bruce Mouat both missed out.
