England’s Keri-anne Payne has been training with Warrender since the end of last year and the new local girl won the 800m freestyle at the East District Open Championships at the Royal Commonwealth Pool.
On the day she was named in Team GB to defend the Open Water title at the World Championships in Barcelona next month, the 25-year-old claimed gold in Edinburgh in a season’s best 8:34.27.
The two-time Olympian left 20-year-old Danielle Huskisson, who trains at Stirling University, to take the silver in 8:47.19.
The English student has been named alongside Payne in the GB women’s World Championship Open Water team. She earned her place by finishing as the top Briton at last week’s Portuguese Open.
