Glasgow 2014: Blair beams with pride in Scots shirt

Have your say

Robert Blair, who won medals for England in the 2002 and 2006 Commonwealth Games, was one of the proudest Scots as he helped his team defeat New Zealand 5-0 and march into tonight’s quarter-finals of the badminton team event at The Emirates Arena.

Facing the Kiwis in a winner takes all final Group C match, Edinburgh-born Blair joined Imogen Bankier in taking the first point in the mixed doubles.

Kieran Merrilees and Kirsty Gilmour then won the singles to make sure of a win and a last eight place.

With the match over as a contest, Blair then teamed up with his fellow Longniddry native Paul Van Rietvelde and added another point in the men’s doubles.

“It feels good playing for Scotland here,” said Blair after his success.

“I’ve always wished that I was wearing a Scottish shirt and so there’s a strong sense of pride for me here in Glasgow.”
