Glasgow 2014: Craig Howieson helps Scots stun Canada

Edinburgh’s Craig Howieson had a key role as Scotland’s table tennis men scored a stunning late-night 3-1 win over No.5 seeds Canada at Scotstoun.

Howieson and Glasgow’s Sean Doherty came from behind to beat Pierre-Luc Theriault and Andre Ho in a pivotal men’s doubles tie 11-6 9-11 4-11 11-7 11-9 to give the hosts a 2-1 lead.

No.1 Gavin Rumgay then secured victory when he fought back from two games down to beat Theriault 6-11 4-11 11-9 12-10 11-2.

Rumgay gave the hosts a perfect start with an 11-8 11-7 11-4 win over Andre Ho but Doherty lost 11-8 5-11 9-11 10-12 to Zhen Wang.

In the morning, Scotland had opened with a comfortable 3-0 win over Uganda, with Howieson winning both of his matches.

Scotland’s women’s team lost 3-0 to No.2 seeds Australia and now face Guyana for a place in the last 16.
