GRANGE hockey coach Andrew Brogdon praised his squad after they cruised into the Scottish Cup Final with an 8-1 demolition of Dundee side Grove Menzieshill.

The result followed a disappointing 3-0 defeat by long-time Division One leaders Bromac Kelburne in Glasgow on Saturday.

Brogdon said the squad responded after Saturday’s disappointment and added: “We played to our game plan and we didn’t play our to our potential on Saturday (against Kelburnre).

“Against Grove we scored early (inside the first two minutes) and that sparked the side. I’m not into history but this is up there as one of our best cup wins.”

Scottish internationalist Callum Milne netted three penalty strokes and Grange were 4-0 ahead at half-time and fired another four goals in the second session at wind-lashed Peffermill.

In the other semi-final Edinburgh University’s Dan Coultas failed to convert a running penalty leaving Bromac Kelburne on course for a league and cup double.

The Scottish internationalist defender had been the hero minutes earlier by converting a penalty corner after the end of regular time to take the tense tussle into the extra session at Peffermill.

Ian Moodie fired the students ahead in the first-half and Josh Cairns netted a penalty flick early in the second-half to level.

German-born Jonas Nommensen netted with 2min 50sec left of normal time, latching on to a loose ball at the far post and prodding it home.

And Coultas sent his penalty corner into the net to level.

Then it was down to the nerve-wracking running penalties and the Yorkshire-born defender’s miss sparked scenes of joy for Kelburne who lead the Division One title race by five points.

Cairns said: “They sat in and made it difficult but we found a way to come through.”
