An ambitious bid to boost an under-funded Olympic sport is being launched in Edinburgh next month.
Edinburgh Handball Club are hosting a major invitation club tournament for both men and women at Meadowbank on Saturday, September 28 and they hope the event will be the start of something big for their sport, which so cruelly lost its high-performance funding after being part of the last year’s Olympics in London.
Tournament organiser Clotilde Cereau says this will be the perfect chance for people to find out why handball is such a popular sport around Europe, especially in France, Germany and Scandinavia: “People are always asking me ‘what is handball – is it like basketball?’”
Sponsoring the tournament will be Portobello businessman Michael Annan of Annan Solicitors and Estate Agents, a big fan of handball.
Apart from three top Scottish teams there will be sides from both England and Ireland.
Newcastle Vikings will field teams in both the men’s and women’s tournaments, with Dundee, Glasgow and Edinburgh providing the opposition in the men’s event and Lughnasa from Dublin and two teams from Edinburgh joining them in the women’s event.
