Edinburgh’s Sally Conway struck judo bronze at the European Open in Rome to make up for her disappointingly early exit at the previous weekend’s Paris Grand Slam. The world No.8, who was seeded, beat Japan’s Tomoe Ueno with an armlock for ippon in the Under-70kg event to clinch a medal.
Conway opened her account by beating Valeriane Fichot (France) by ippon, but she then lost her final pool match to Japan’s Karen Nunira, who went on to take the title.
She came through the repechage, beating Russian Alena Prokopenko, before taking bronze by beating Ueno.
In the Under-48kg event, Coatbridge’s Kimberley Renicks lost to Valentina Moscatt (Italy) in her opening match.
