Murrayfield’S Kerry Barr edged closer to the medal play-offs, while Colin Campbell beat Ross Hepburn in an Edinburgh head-to-head at the Scottish Curling Championships in Perth.

Barr pipped Jenny Marshall 4-3 and, although she then lost 9-5 to Lorna Vevers, she still remains second overall with four wins out of six. Club-mate Gina Aitken, though, will not add the senior crown to last month’s junior title after two more defeats yesterday to Jenny Martin and tournament favourite Hannah Fleming.

Campbell and Hepburn played ‘lead’ for David Edwards’ and Warwick Smith’s teams respectively and it was Campbell who opened the men’s competition in style with a 9-5 victory. He followed that last night by beating Perth Masters winner Logan Gray 8-3, while Hepburn bounced back to help Smith’s rink to a 5-4 win over Grant Hardie.

Murrayfield skip John Hamilton lost 8-2 to former world champion Ewan MacDonald before recovering with a double at the final end to stun Moray Combe 5-4.
