Lothians speed skater Elise Christie broke the 500m world record during the second World Cup event of the season in Salt Lake City.

The Livingston-born 26-year-old clocked 42.335 seconds – beating the previous record of 42.504 held by Fan Kexin of China – in her quarter-final.

However, Christie took a tumble during the closing stages of the final to miss out on a medal.

The Scot won 500m gold in the opening event of World Cup series in Calgary a week ago.
