Edinburgh’s Anastasia Mikheeva, 14, has joined fellow Scots Maia Lumsden and Isobel Wallace in the second round of the prestigious Roehampton Nike grade one under-18 tennis tournament after beating Australia’s Olivia Tjandramulia in three sets. Miss Mikheeva is hoping for a Wimbledon junior slam wild card and will now play the 11th seed Paula Badosa Gibert.
n BLACKHALL came tantalisingly close to defending the Scottish women’s tennis cup when they were edged out 5-4 by Newlands at Craiglockhart in a repeat of last year’s final yesterday.
Leading 2-1 after the first round, Blackhall were unable to build on that early lead, mainly through the exploits of the Glaswegians’ top couple, Paige Denholm and Heather Lockhart, who won all three ties.
However, Blackhall’s Rosie Dennis and Millie Stretton won two ties and there was one win apiece for Hannah Sharp and Niamh Coventry.
Also winning a tie for Blackhall were Sonia Vickers and Eilidh Smith. The outcome hinged on a final series tie-break in which Vickers and Smith lost to Jan Oliphant and Caitlin Steel.
In the men’s final, David Lloyd Aberdeen upset the defending champions, Thorn Park, also by a 5-4 margin.
