Murrayfield curler Bruce Mouat had the consolation of losing to the eventual champion after crashing out in the quarter-finals of the Champery Masters in Switzerland.
The talented junior also took great encouragement from his performances in Group D as he won four games out of five, including three in a row on Saturday.
That set up a last-eight clash yesterday with Aberdeen’s Tom Brewster, but the former world silver medallist was too experienced for Mouat and stormed through 9-3. Brewster later completed a special Swiss double by pipping local skip Marc Pfister 5-4 in the final to add the Champery title to his Swiss Cup victory in Basel earlier this month.
Meanwhile, Edinburgh curler Gina Aitken narrowly failed to qualify for the Forfar Open quarter-finals.
The 20-year-old beat her old junior rivals Katie Murray 9-3 and Jennifer Martin 7-4 but lost 7-4 to Lauren Gray, setting up a winner-takes-all clash with former world junior champion Hannah Fleming which her more experienced opponent won 9-1.
