Edinburgh judoka Sally Conway will take a six-week break from international competition ahead of the Samsun Grand Prix in Turkey after winning a silver medal at the Dusseldorf Grand Prix in Germany at the weekend.
The world No.9 just missed out on gold when she lost to Moroccan Assmaa Niang, the world No. 11, in the final of the Under-70kg event, after being held down for ippon.
But it was her fifth grand prix medal in 18 months and keeps her on course for a medal at this summer’s Commonwealth Games. “Overall I am pleased but I am disappointed with the final,” said Conway. “Still, progress is being made and this will continue in the run-up to the Grand Prix in Turkey.”
In her opening match, Conway beat Angolan Antonia Moreira when she held her opponent down for ippon and then won her group by beating Korean Ye-Sul Hwang by yuko.
Up against home favourite and world No.13 Iljana Marzok in the semi-finals, Conway came through with an arm lock for ippon to clinch her final place.
