Edinburgh judoka Sarah Clark sent out a message to her rivals for a place in Scotland’s Commonwealth Games team by winning the Under-63kg title at the Pan American Cup in Montevideo, Uruguay.
The 2006 European champion, currently ninth in the Scottish rankings and needing to break into the top seven, fought her way through to the final last night before beating Brazil’s Katherine Campos.
She opened by defeating Brazilian Alexia Castilhos and won her group by beating Ecuador’s Estefania Garcia to progress to the semi-finals.
She then beat another Brazilian Mariana Silva, a World Junior bronze medallist, in the semi-finals to set up a gold medal match with Campos. Jodie Mullen finished fifth.
Coatbridge’s Louise Renicks took silver in the Under-52kg event, winning her group and then beating Argentina’s Oritia Gonzalez in the semi-finals. But she then lost narrowly in the final to Brazil’s Raquel Silva.
Stephanie Inglis, from Inverness, was fifth in the Under-57kg class after losing to Brazilian Flavia Gomes in the bronze medal match. Tain’s Connie Ramsay finished seventh.
James Millar was fifth in the men’s Under-66kg, losing the bronze medal contest to Adrien Bourguigon (France).
At Under-60kg, world medallist John Buchanan won his opening match against Brazil’s Carlos Antun but then lost to Mexican Nabor Castillo. England’s Ashley McKenzie took gold.
In the Under-73kg event, Edinburgh’s Patrick Dawson currently top of the Scottish rankings, lost his first match to Russian Khabib Murtuzov.
