Edinburgh coach Alan Solomons could be forced to hand a starting berth to recovering back rower Dave Denton when he names his side to meet Lyon in Friday’s European Challenge Cup tie at BT Murrayfield.

With Cornell du Preez already a long-term absentee as a result of an ankle injury, Solomons may also be without the services of Mike Coman for some time after the Edinburgh skipper hobbled off with only five minutes gone in last week’s win at Bordeaux-Begles. The full extent of the problem has not yet been assessed.

Denton, who has been out of action since suffering a hamstring injury during pre-season training, is now close to readiness for a return that would prove timely for Solomons. The player was expected to start on the bench on Friday, with the expectation that he would be eased back into the fray, but the injury pile-up may force Solomons to consider the 24-year-old for a place in the team.

Lyon will be looking to build on a successful opening to the tournament, after taking a bonus point from their 28-18 win at home to London Welsh.
