Edinburgh face Lyon fringe men in Challenge Cup

Edinburgh Rugby received a boost ahead of Friday’s European Challenge Cup clash against Lyon at BT Murrayfield with the news that the French outfit will field several fringe players.

With the club’s main focus on surviving in the Top 14 rather than progressing in Europe, Lyon coach Tim Lane plans to rotate his squad and rest several men who have been regarded as first choices. Among those expected to remain at home are the regular half-backs Enrico Januarie and Stephen Brett.

Lane is likely to name Mathieu Loree at scrum-half and Romain Loursac at stand-off. Both started on the bench last week when Januarie was among the try scorers in the bonus point 28-18 win at home to London Welsh. He was joined on the score sheet by centre Fabrice Estabanez, who also looks set to be rested.

Tighthead prop Jeremy Castex faces up to two months out with injury.
