Matt Scott grabbed a brace of tries as Edinburgh returned from Italy with a 29-8 bonus-point triumph over Treviso.

The victory came as welcome boost to coach Alan Solomons’ eighth-place side after two successive defeats as they chase a top-six spot in the Guinness PRO12 and a place in next season’s Champions Cup.

Mike Coman and Andries Strauss also touched down before Simone Ragusi scored a consolation for Treviso.

After a frantic opening quarter, Dougie Fife earned the field position for Edinburgh’s first try in just failing to gather his own chip-kick at the corner flag, his opposite number Ragusi covering well to scramble into touch. From the resultant lineout, however, a well-constructed maul made its way to the line with captain Coman going over, and Sam Hidalgo-Clyne converting.

Edinburgh’s second try came barely 90 seconds later.

Ben Toolis charged down James Ambrosini’s attempted clearance and the ball bounced kindly for Scott to run in behind the posts untouched, setting up an easy conversion for his scrum-half. Jayden Hayward landed a penalty to get the hosts off the mark on 34 minutes, but Hidalgo-Clyne cancelled it out with a well-struck goal of his own.

Hayward missed a kick just before half-time after referee Nigel Owens penalised Edinburgh for collapsing the scrum.

Solomons’ men scored the pick of the tries on the hour mark. Hamish Watson charged through the home midfield and, when the ball was recycled quickly, a strong carry from Scott created the space for Strauss to slide in at the corner.

Hidalgo-Clyne missed the conversion, and ten minutes later, Ragusi stole the ball from Tim Visser to run up the unguarded flank to score.

With the try unconverted, Edinburgh went for the bonus-point touchdown and got it when Scott cut a great angle off Greig Tonks on the 22 to score, Hidalgo-Clyne converting.
