A NEW era in Murrayfield rugby history opens tonight with Alan Solomons taking charge of his first home match as Edinburgh coach with Newport Gwent Dragons the visitors.
And the 63-year-old South African has revealed he is ready to ease one of his summer signings into the action from off the bench.
Prop Wicus Blaauw has experience of both the French Top 14 with Biarritz and the Super 15 with Cape Town Stormers and big things will be expected in due course.
But Solomons says: “Wiccus has just come off the farm in Namibia.
“He’s not played since last season and not had a pre season so we have to work at conditioning him and building him into games, build him up.
“He is certainly a strong scrummager, though, and he will understand the defensive system because he has been part of it.”
While insisting it will take time for the team to adjust to new methods Solomons is adamant that his new charges have already passed one test judged on the resolve they showed in the second half of an opening day defeat at Munster.
