Edinburgh Rugby today signed a 30-year-old prop forward released by relegated Worcester Warriors as they bid to recapture a place at Europe’s top table next season.
John Andress, an Ulsterman, comes in on a two-year deal in the wake of two other tighthead props, Geoff Cross and Alex Allan, leaving after going on Scotland’s summer international tour.
“We need depth in that tighthead position, and he’ll give us a lot of experience in that role,” said Edinburgh coach Alan Solomons of a player whom he noted as having potential while he was coaching at Ulster a decade ago.
“He is an outstanding scrummager, but is also good around the field.”
In the same media release Andress, who is 6ft 2in and 18st 3lb and has also played for Exeter and Harlequins, says: “I’m really excited about joining Edinburgh Rugby. It’s a fantastic rugby club in a great city.”
Ex-Ireland age group cap Andress will contest the tighthead position with Willem Nel, a South African and Simon Berghan, a New Zealander who is Scottish qualified. He arrived a couple of months ago and made a debut off the bench in the final match of the season.
