Ewan McQuillin, the 22-year-old Edinburgh Rugby prop who debuted last weekend against Ulster, will travel to New Zealand this summer on the annual Macphail Scholarship.

This was revealed today by Edinburgh coach Alan Solomons, who also announced four changes for Saturday’s clash with Benetton Treviso in Italy.

McQuillin is included on the bench, having played the final eight minutes last weekend.

“Stevie Scott [forwards coach] thinks he [McQuillin] is a real prospect. We are going to send him on a Macphail Scholarship to Canterbury,” said Solomons.

Previous recipients who have gone on to win full international honours are John Barclay, Grant Gilchrist and Jonny Gray.

Meanwhile, Edinburgh recall international trio Dave Denton, Ally Dickinson and Matt Scott, the last named in the less familiar position of outside centre.

The other new face compared with last week’s starting line-up is stand off Harry Leonard.

Edinburgh: Bezuidenhout; Cuthbert, Scott, Strauss (captain), Brown; Leonard, Hart; Dickinson, Ford, Nel, Gilchrist, Van der Westhuizen, Du Preez, Denton, Grant. Subs: Hilterbrand, Blaauw, McQuillin, Atkins, Leonardi, Kennedy, Beard, Hidalgo-Clyne.
