Scotland’s planning for Saturday’s opening viagogo Autumn rugby Test against Argentina at BT Murrayfield was disrupted today when it emerged Edinburgh prop Allan Dell would require leg surgery.
But, as Dell, 22 – a former member of South Africa’s world under-20 championship winning team but qualified to represent Scotland through ancestry – dropped out, Scotland coach Vern Cotter was able to call up fit-again Ryan Grant.
A British and Irish Lion capped 18 times by Scotland, the experienced Grant has been battling shoulder problems but proved his fitness for Glasgow at the weekend.
Meanwhile, the damage to Dell means Edinburgh Rugby’s injury crisis has deepened.
Dell arrived at BT Murrayfield this season in the midst of rehab for a shoulder problem.
