Preston and Cougars quick off the mark

After finishing second and third in RBS Rugby East One last term, Preston Lodge and RHC Cougars both got off to winning starts this time around at the weekend.

For long periods of 2012/13 both sides challenged eventual winners Livingston for top spot before the Midlothian men took home the silverware.

And they both look like they will be up there again this season, PL beginning with a 41-23 win at North Berwick on Saturday and RHC defeating Portobello 51-3.

Dunbar and Linlithgow both also had impressive opening days, the former winning 49-12 at Langholm and the latter seeing off Hawick Linden 33-7.

In East Two, Dalkeith were involved in a cracker at Berwick. The two sides were tied at 30-30 at Scremerston before two late tries saw the visitors pull away to win 45-30.

Penicuik secured a fine 21-19 away win over Inverleith at Arboretum while Forrester started well to defeat Trinity Accies 26-6.

Lismore edged out Leith 25-19 at the Inch with Edinburgh Northern going down 37-20 in the Borders to Earlston.

Broughton got off to a winning start in RBS East Three, defeating Liberton 23-17 at Wardie.

Gareth Henderson and Duncan Nicolson were amongst the tries as the hosts took advantage of a Liberton red card to secure five points.

Gala YM and St Boswells could be the teams to beat though in this league, the former having defeated Walkerburn 84-0 and the latter defeating Ross High 51-3.

The Queensferry-Moray House match was postponed.
