Roddy Grant, omitted from Scotland’s elongated squad for this summer’s four-Test tour, today received a pick-me-up with inclusion in a 12-strong sevens player pool for this summer’s Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.
Grant, who has won 12 World Sevens series caps, was last involved with Scotland at the 2010 Edinburgh tournament.
If the Edinburgh player’s inclusion is a surprise given his recent lack of sevens opportunities and the heavy emphasis placed on preparing for these Games, the choice of Test wing Tommy Seymour must be seen as a major shock.
Seymour, capped eight times at 15-a-sides, has yet to play sevens at this level yet the announcement document hints at easy transference, stating: “Seymour is named in the squad after a string of impressive performances this year for his club and the Scotland national team, showcasing relevant skills to the abbreviated game.”
The sevens are at Ibrox Stadium on July 26-27. Scotland are in a group with New Zealand, Canada and Barbados.
Scotland Sevens squad: Richie Vernon, James Eddie (both Glasgow), James Johnstone, Roddy Grant, Scott Riddell (all Edinburgh), Colin Shaw, Lee Jones, Colin Gregor (Glasgow), Scott Wight (Melrose), Mark Bennett, Sean Lamont, Tommy Seymour (Glasgow)
