Edinburgh Rugby coach Alan Solomons has today confirmed last week’s Evening News revelations of a hooking crisis in the squad ahead of a match in Ulster, subsequently lost 0-30.

In the lead-up it was revealed that Ross Ford was struggling with illness and although no mention was made at the team announcement – part of a media briefing ahead of the fixture – Solomons now said: “On the Thursday night we departed for Belfast, Ross was unable to accompany us as he had been vomiting all night on the Wednesday. We only have two fit senior hookers so he simply had to play. We fully medicated him and he flew into Belfast on the afternoon of the game.”

Reserve hooker James Hilterbrand, it has emerged, was also ailing and Solomons admitted: “In truth neither should have played.” At the same time he praised medics for getting the players “able to play”.

Meanwhile, Solomons has hinted ahead of a team unveiling later today that tomorrow’s home encounter with Dragons will see Test wing Dougie Fife back after an absence of four matches. The return of ... Dougie Fife has buoyed the lads,” said Solomons.

• BT Premiership Currie have signed former Auckland under-21 player Travis Brooke who is on the bench for tomorrow’s visit to Ayr.
