Local rugby sides may not have been in league action on Saturday, but they had a keen eye on events elsewhere as rivals delivered results that could impact the battle for promotion.
Stewart’s Melville dropped to third place in BT National League Division One after GHA – the Inverleith men’s rivals for the promotion play-off spot – posted a 69-10 win over Hillhead/Jordanhill. Stew Mel must now win at Peebles in their final fixture of the campaign this Saturday and hope that GHA fail to beat Dundee High, although the Capital outfit would need a bonus-point victory if GHA achieve a draw.
The success for GHA brought to an end the slim possibility of Watsonians making it into the top two.
Musselburgh’s lead at the top of Division Two was cut to a single point after Howe of Fife, who have a game in hand over Burgh, chalked up a 71-19 success over Cartha Queens Park. The two will meet at Stoneyhill on Saturday in a clash that is set to decide the outcome of the title race.
